The question Will Technology Feed a Warming World? Is a question which is being widely discussed nowadays and is a topic of immense importance? However, to understand its importance we first need to understand what a warming world means. Global warming is the long term heating of the Earth’s climate system due to many different factors, mainly due to fossil fuel burning. This increase in fossil fuel burning leads to trapping of greenhouse gases in the Earth’ atmosphere. These gases then absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth’s surface and should actually be leaving the earth’s atmosphere. However, as they are no released back to space, this causes an increase in the temperature of Earth. This is called as the greenhouse effect.
Since the pre-industrial period, human activities are estimated to have increased Earth’s global average temperature by about 1 degree Celsius, which means that temperatures are soaring everywhere and causing the heating up of earth, a number that is currently increasing by 0.2 degrees Celsius (0.36 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade. Most of the current warming trend is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) the result of human activity since the 1950s and is proceeding at an unprecedented rate over decades to millennia. These increased temperatures also have a severe effect on the ecosystem of the earth and has caused destruction of many natural habitats and many natural ecosystems.
The next question is how to tackle global warming. There are many solutions but the most advised ones include switching to renewable sources of energy so that the use of fossil fuels can be reduced such that the greenhouse effect can be reduced. The next step, which is related is making use of electric cars so that fuel consumption can be reduced further. Furthermore, energy should be conserved my insulation of homes and buildings.
Now, to answer the question will Technology Feed a Warming World? We have to understand that the worlds’ population is projected to grow nearly 10 billion by 2050 which is an increase of 2 billion people from today and there is a major concern on how these people will be fed. Well here comes technology. Technology can be used to feed people but how?
Food systems are intimately connected, meaning that by transforming them, we can collectively tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges. Food technologies enable us to improve health and nutrition, promote environmental sustainability and deliver economic growth. These technologies are focused on increasing food production reducing food wastage and improving efficiency. Technology can be used to tackle decreasing crops yields. Innovation in crops cultivating has ensured a manifold increase in productions which will help tackle the growing need for food. While satellite imaging can be used to monitor resources in a better way
