This project enables 23rd and 25th-grade girls in Bankondji and a close-by village to develop the power to know texts in reading comprehension, math, and other subjects, \in other to help them to successfully pass the exam needed to enroll in any high school in Cameroon. The 100 girls within the peer-to-peer tutoring projects are very engaged within the program and committed to their personal success. The project also provides scholarships to its graduates, in order that they can attend day high schools.
As from our observation girls in eighth grade living in rural areas cannot perform at grade level and, consequently, cannot pass the exams required to enter high school and continue their education. It takes a minimum of two years of intensive work to bring the women up to grade-level in reading standards, comprehension, mathematics, and science. the matter is profoundly rooted within the gaps created by the low level of the first education system. It is due to this result, that we bring seventh-grade girls into the tutoring program.
SLAE Foundation uses collaborative peer-to-peer methods to bring the women up to grade standards. First of all, we get the women engaged in taking ownership of their learning instead of believing understanding by rote. Tutors provide expertise, experience, and encouragement to women. Tutors support the scholars in solving problems and obtaining answers through questioning, thus improving their skills and keeping them focused.
The tutoring program increases the pool of eighth-grade graduates for Cameroonian and therefore the SLAE Foundation boarding high school under construction. To date, SLAE Foundation has tutored 321 girls, including 126 who graduated bypassing the high school entrance examination (thus, two returning young mothers out of faculty for four years). Three scholarship beneficiaries graduated and are pursuing education. The tutoring program is replicable to neighboring communities. It builds the girls’ skills necessary for the fulfillment
There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning failure.nn– OLIVER SANDERO
